Discovering Community at Senior Planet: Meet Jessie Hawthorn
In a world that often marginalizes the voices of older adults, Jessie Hawthorn is carving out a vibrant space filled with learning and connection at Senior Planet's Lowry center. Since stepping into her role as Center Manager this past August, she has brought with her a wealth of experience in community-based adult education and a passion for fostering inclusive environments for all ages.
Her Journey to Senior Planet
Jessie's path to leading the Lowry center stemmed from her previous role at the Colorado Department of Labor, where she oversaw the Digital Navigator Pilot Program. Her pivotal visit to the Lowry center deeply resonated with her, leading to her involvement in a licensing initiative that aims to extend the mission of Senior Planet—a nonprofit focused on empowering seniors through technology and community engagement. "Serving historically marginalized communities has always been my passion," Jessie mentions. Her commitment shines through her decision to dedicate her career to improving lives through education.
The Heart of Denver's Community
Having moved to Denver back in 1994, Jessie fell in love with the city's unique charm and diversity, noting that it has grown significantly but retains a "small-town vibe". Denver is a melting pot of cultures; it's home to a vibrant Ethiopian community among many others. With over 30,000 Ethiopians residing there, Jessie expresses that this cultural exposure has enriched her life, especially as she has adopted two children from Ethiopia. Her experiences in this city add a personal layer to her role, making her a relatable figure in the community.
Favorite Moments at Senior Planet
For Jessie, the best part of her job is the people she meets: "Getting to know our participants, volunteers, and staff has been so fulfilling. The sense of community at our center is incredible." The center hosts approximately 20 volunteers who contribute invaluable insights and energy to programming. Participating in training sessions has allowed her to reconnect with her teaching roots, further igniting her passion for facilitating learning among the older adult population.
A Passion for Arts and Well-Being
Outside of her managerial duties, Jessie firmly believes in maintaining a work-life balance. Her love for live music and the performing arts figures prominently in her leisure activities, including frequent visits to local theaters and concert venues. This commitment to enriching experiences extends beyond personal enjoyment—her interests align with the mission of Senior Planet in encouraging participants to explore their passions and embrace the joy in every aspect of life.
Embracing Aging with Attitude
When asked what "aging with attitude" means, Jessie reflects on her own journey, stating, "I believe life becomes fuller and richer every year." She embraces this concept wholeheartedly, encouraging others to reject the limitations often placed on seniors. Emphasizing growth and joy, she views aging as an opportunity to explore new possibilities and redefine oneself continuously.
Join the Movement
At Senior Planet, there are continual opportunities for older adults to develop new skills, form friendships, and thrive in a supportive community. The center offers a variety of classes and events aimed at promoting a positive and fulfilling lifestyle for seniors. More than just a hub for technology learning, Senior Planet is a gathering place for shared experiences and mutual encouragement.
